Arizona's classic road trip climbs from saguaro desert to ponderosa forest in a single day. From Phoenix it's about 115 miles up I-17 to Sedona, where the Red Rock Scenic Byway threads between Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock; then 30 miles up Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff, and another 80 or so to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon — roughly 230 miles and 6,000 feet of elevation gain in all.

Four days gives Sedona the two nights it deserves and gets you to the canyon for sunset. Here's the route, the stops, and the plan, including Sedona's parking rules and the Grand Canyon's shuttle-only roads. Let Wanderply build your version and narrate each stop as the desert turns to forest.

01 History

Montezuma Castle National Monument

Just off I-17, a five-story, 20-room dwelling built into a limestone cliff by the Sinagua people more than 800 years ago — and nothing to do with Montezuma. A flat, shaded 1/3-mile loop; about 45 minutes, with a small per-person fee.

02 Scenic drive

Red Rock Scenic Byway (SR-179)

The 7.5-mile approach into Sedona passes Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and the spires of Cathedral Rock. Pull over at the Bell Rock trailhead for an easy scramble; Cathedral Rock's short, steep climb is best at sunrise.

03 Landmark

Chapel of the Holy Cross

A modernist chapel completed in 1956, built right into the red buttes with a giant cross forming its glass front. Free to visit; the ramp up gives one of Sedona's best views. 30 minutes.

04 Overnight

Sedona & Airport Mesa

Base for two nights: trails at Devil's Bridge and Soldier Pass, jeep tours on Schnebly Hill Road, and the Airport Mesa overlook — Sedona's go-to sunset spot. Busy trailheads fill by 8 a.m.; the free Sedona Shuttle serves the most popular ones.

Oak Creek Canyon & Slide Rock

05 Scenic drive

Oak Creek Canyon & Slide Rock

SR-89A winds 14 miles up a narrow, forested canyon to Flagstaff. Slide Rock State Park, an old apple homestead, has an 80-foot natural sandstone water slide in the creek — popular and fee-based in summer. The switchbacks near the top have a scenic vista point.

06 Food / science

Flagstaff & Lowell Observatory

A mountain college town at 7,000 feet on old Route 66. Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered in 1930, runs evening telescope viewing — fitting for the world's first International Dark Sky City.

07 Destination

Desert View & the South Rim

Enter by the east gate to reach the Desert View Watchtower, Mary Colter's 1932 stone tower on the rim, then follow Desert View Drive west past Grandview and Lipan Points to Mather Point and Grand Canyon Village.

Good to know

Frequently asked

How far is Sedona from Phoenix, and the Grand Canyon from Sedona?

Phoenix to Sedona is about 115 miles (2 hours) via I-17 and SR-179. Sedona to the South Rim is about 110 miles (2–2.5 hours) via Oak Creek Canyon and Flagstaff — longer if you enter through Desert View.

Do I need a pass to park at Sedona trailheads?

Many trailheads on the surrounding national forest require a Red Rock Pass (about $5 a day) or an interagency pass displayed on your dashboard. Lots at the most popular trails fill early, and the free Sedona Shuttle serves several of them on its operating days.

How much is the Grand Canyon entrance fee?

About $35 per vehicle, valid 7 days at either rim. Montezuma Castle charges a small per-person fee, and Slide Rock State Park charges per vehicle. Non-US residents pay higher rates at the busiest national parks as of 2026.

Can I drive my own car along the South Rim?

Desert View Drive (25 miles east of the village) is open to private cars all year. Hermit Road to the west, including Hopi Point, is closed to private vehicles from March 1 to November 30 — ride the free Hermit Road shuttle instead.

When is the best time for this trip?

Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November). Phoenix tops 110°F in summer, while the South Rim at 7,000 feet can see snow from November through March. Summer afternoons bring monsoon storms to both Sedona and the canyon.
